PAN'S LABYRINTH - THE CHILD EATER

I was researching about Spiderwick earlier on Tuesday, in school, and found out about Pan's Labyrinth, where I came to know about this creature or monster you would call it, that have eyes on his palms! I find it rather amusing actually but I have to say it's an interesting character!

IF YOU LOOK, YOU'LL FIND - A FIELD GUIDE

My semester project has finally started and here's the title:
‘URBAN HUNTER’ (If You Look, You’ll Find)

THE TASK:
To begin with, look around you – the next time you get out of your residence, your comfort zone or ‘hermitat’ (habitat) - IF YOU LOOK, YOU’LL FIND amongst you: the environment filled with man-made needs and provisions. The street, the trees, the car-parks, the bus shelter, the poster besides the bus stops, the lamp post, the banners hanging down from the lamp post, the banners hanging across the road, attempted graffiti left to weather conditions, the shops, their identity, the window display, the business, their products, the brands; and there’s the air we breathe in, the water we use and drink, the food we consume… but wait – there’s more to life than all these. What about urbanization in Singapore? What is the Singapore culture? They speak heaps, and we want you to get involved by designing its cultural and heritage landscape.

To begin, you will need to give some thoughts and ideas on our urban city to get a sense of direction. It’s your Assessment Project. Assume that a Client hands you this Project costing close to a million dollars to ensure that their Project works with the help of your creativity.

As a ‘Urban Hunter’, you must select ONE of the following topics:
1. Architectural
2. Environmental
3. Cultural

The week started well.. I started brainstorming with my classmates and we found quite a handful of issues regarding Architectural, Environmental and Cultural in Singapore. Having brainstormed about places related to Landscape Architecture, I've chosen Singapore Botanic Garden as my site and I had to come up with a design brief..

Children of today's context have buried their curiosity of the world around them into the hearts of advanced technology. They got themselves in contact with computer games at a very young age, getting younger in years to come, and lost total interest in the world around them.

Parents who have realised this fact will try to get their kids involved in educational trips like farm visits or tours, which tends to cost for hiring a professional tour guide to explain nature and bring the children around. In the other hand, the trip usually last for only one to two hours. Children may or may not take the information home with them during these trips and individual interactions for group trips might not be possible. Some schools have worksheets for the children to work on during these trips, to ensure that they have gained these knowledge, but it usually turn out to spoil the mood of the children.

I have a few proposals in mind but mainly revolving around the idea of a Singapore Botanic Garden Field Guide which allow children and parents to go down to SBG at their own free time, spending not only family time but also educational time together. The idea was either, to do an illustrated compilation of the plants, their parts and where to find them with a little animal mascot showing around, OR a story of a child meeting an animal in Botanic Garden one day and showing him/her around the place, OR make Botanic Garden into a fantasy world which MIGHT NOT exist but make the informations delivered in the story..

Well.. I believe, as a kid, everyone will choose the Fantasy World and I believe it will catch the most attention as compared to the rest. BUT! That will mean that I will need tons of informations and know Botanic Garden inside out within a short time frame. Good Luck to me then! haha..

I was quite relieved actually that I can explain and know my project inside out, having no doubts about my concept (which so far has no doubts at all). I'm starting to love my current project..

AN INTERVIEW WITH NOISE SINGAPORE

Got an email from Zacky (he's from 20twenty Public Relations, on behalf of NAC’s Noise Singapore) last Tuesday regarding an Interview by Noise but I was busy with my assignment and didn't get to reply him until last Friday. Here's a draft from the interview, some parts were edited by them.. =)

About Yvonne S. aka E’von Le Angelis

Yvonne loves doing illustration art and handicrafts. She is currently pursuing her second Diploma in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and believes that her hands are the greatest gifts from God. Her artistic interests extend to photography and she loves the wonders of nature and country sides. "I do enjoy movies very much 'cause they were never real and they made me believe the unbelievables.", she said.

1. Tell us about your Noise Experience?
I heard about Noise Singapore when Noise came to NAFA for an event and I saw one of my friend's work published in the 2009 Noise Magazine. I applied for photography, was shortlisted but I didn't get selected. It wasn’t until May 2010 that I found out that Noise was calling for portfolio submission through an e-news. I submitted, got selected and saw my work exhibited at Raffles Place Park, *Scape Youth Park and 4 different bus-stop. During this period of time, NAC invited me to be part of Noise Design Team to design postcards that was distributed at the exhibitions and my school as well.

2. What have you been busy with lately?
Currently I'm busy with my school assignments and projects. Thinking what my new illustrations will be like and thinking about stories, reading some illustration books like Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away and How to Draw Manga.

3. Any interesting Noise experiences to share?
I was extremely excited when I heard that my works will be exhibited, so I made my visit to each and every one of them, despite the distance I had to travel, in order to record some memories of my life. I think my best Noise Experience was to see my characters grow from its original fingertip size, meeting them as if they were real, taking pictures with them and having my friends to share the joy with me.

4. Gazing into the crystal ball, what plans can we expect from you?
I guess it will be more illustrations and more illustrations! I'm wondering if I can have the honour to work with Noise during my holidays? I wish I can join TAP too but it seems like my numerous school assignments prevent me from participating.

5. Alright, we’ll be upfront. As a proud Noise alumni, can you help us plug the open call for submissions that's happening from now till 31 Oct.
Spreading the news around? If that's the case, I've already done it umpteen times! Wanna know why I’ve been so enthusiastic about plugging Noise, well join and find out for yourself. =)

A DREAM ABOUT MONSTERS & GOBLINS

I've always got fantasy like dreams which gave me great inspirations and stories to illustrate but I've yet to do so after "The House in my Dream".. Arghh~ I never had enough time to do everything!

Sometimes I force myself to sleep further in order to see more of the stories like this morning.

I was in this mansion and there was this old man who showed us (there were my friends and me I supposed, couldn't really remember the faces) around the mansion and the creatures he have. He told us they could be very dangerous (in a sense of killing) if they are not in control but he was able to control them somehow and it is safe for us to see. He also said that we have to keep it secret and it was only us who could see them.

At first, he introduced us a Scorpion-like creature in the hall which is really tiny and it shows no threat at all. Then, he ushered us into his well decorated kitchen and show us a very huge creature in the garden outside his kitchen (the kitchen was open out into the garden without any walls). The creature was a combination of scorpion head and cobra tail, it was sleeping under a big blanket. The old man woke the creature to let us have a better look but it turned out to be irritated and attempt to attack us!

"Leave the room and run! I'll handle this!" That was the last words from the old man and we ran back to the hall, but to our surprise, the tiny scorpion-like creature seems to have evolved and turned into half a meter tall creature! We fought out way through and lock ourselves in a white vintage room on the third storey and landed ourselves with two toddlers (maybe it's their room?).

"We have to save the toddlers!", said one of my friends. "But how if we were to escape through the windows? They wouldn't be able to make it for a three storey jump!", I asked.

Then, one of my friend took a dropper and touch lightly onto the head of one of the toddler whom he was carrying and the toddler grew into a child! He touch it again and he turned into a teenager! That solves the conflict and I did the same to the other child.

We jump right into the hedges behind the mansion and climbed on top of the concrete fence which could lead us on a field out of the mansion but we decided to check on the old man, so we followed the edge of the fence to the kitchen's garden. We saw the old man's wife arguing with the old man about some issues from a distance (the old man told us that he didn't want his wife to know about the creatures he kept, it was meant to be a secret and I guess it causes the argument).

We realised the huge creature was no where to be seen, so we decided to jump down from the fence to the narrow pathway in the garden to call for the old man but we saw a huge tail landing right beside us. The creature was hiding under the enormous blanket leaving it's tail outside and we somehow triggered the creature to come after us. Surprisingly, the old man did no attempt to stop the creature and gave us a wicked smile. It was then we realised that the real intention of the old man was to kill us all and he set the creatures after us all along.

We escaped on the narrow pathway along the fence and found the exit to the field. We fought our way over the fence and fled to reality, finding ourselves in a school event hall with all our classmates. We're saved!

If you think that was the end of the story, you are wrong! My dream went further into the story..
I was looking for my boyfriend and gave him a hug, feeling relieved to see him in the crowd. He asked me what happened and I told him that he wouldn't believe what I said, it was all like a dream! But he told me that he had to gather for a prize giving ceremony and went to queue at the right side of the hall. I followed him over but he was busy and I left the crowd.

As I distanced away from the crowd, a Volkswagen Bus park right beside me and I was dragged into the back of the Volkswagen Bus by a strong lady! (She has long brown curly hair and decent look, those you would see from mythical stories, but she doesn't look like she has the physical strength to pull me in, super natural power seems to be more convincing. The interior was more like a van than a "bus" and the floor of the "bus" was filled with grey carpet with a smell that say it's new.) I was struggling to break through and the idea of being sent back to the world with creatures engulfs me!

Meantime, I saw two Goblins like creature outside the windows of the Volkswagen Bus trying to break-in. The lady calmed me and explained that she was trying to protect me and I have to be in her protected zone in order to keep myself safe, we have to leave the place. I argued with her that I had to inform my boyfriend but she said I'll be in danger if I leave the "bus" and drove off without my consent! I watched my boyfriend laughing with his friends from the back of the window with disappointment..

I was arranged to stay in my home and was told not to leave the protected house. The lady had issues to due with one day and left my mom in-charge. I sense some unusual feeling when my mom was watering the plants outside. The Goblins were coming! I scream for my mom to come back in but mysteriously, three of my belongings were at the corridor and my mom went out to get it for me, she said it was important. I saw a Goblin appear right behind her back and proof!.. I woke up. I wonder how the story will continue but I guess my imaginative juice were dried up..
